Christmas Books

Did anyone receive any books for Christmas? I was really pleased with the ones I was given, and have already managed to read three of them. The Silly Book of Weird And Wacky Words is great fun and full of puzzles, riddles and games. Roger McGough is one of my favourite poets and his new book, Poetry Pie, is definitely one of his best. Press Here is a really original idea for a book and my daughter insists that I read it with her about every twenty minutes.

I was also given The Passage by Justin Cronin, which is is a book aimed at adults. It's set in the future, when the world has been overrun by zombie-vampires. My favourite kind of book! Everyone I know who's read it says that it's great. I've had a sneaky look at the first few pages and I think they might be right!

As I'm unable to walk past a second-hand bookshop without going in, today I also ended up buying some cheap Agatha Christie books. She was famous for writing detective stories and was one of my favourite authors when I was a teenager. I'm hoping that I enjoy them as much this time round!

If you were lucky enough to get any books for Christmas, or bought one for anyone as a present, why not tell us what they were in the comments box.

  4. My daughter bought me 'More than this' by Patrick Ness (I think she liked it for the patterned cover!) and I've just finished reading 'Slade House' by David Mitchell this evening. It may be one of the least cheery Christmas books I've ever read! And I think this is my first Christmas that I haven't received any children's books- luckily not long until my birthday...

  5. Greetings fellow book lovers! I only received 1 book from Santa this year (boo) but luckily I also have a winter birthday so I actually have a small stash ready to read (Mr Biddle knows this is always true!)
So far I've LOVED A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig & Chris Mould- it's a fantastic happyish ending story with amazing illustrations!
I've also been a little scared by an adult book by Neil Gaiman (genius writer) and am currently intrigued by a mystery called The Distant Hours (which is again an adult book) which keeps flashing back to World War 2. I'll let you know if I work it all out before the end of the book

  7. I really enjoyed seeing my boys faces when they opened their stockings on Christmas morning to find the new illustrated Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, a Star Wars facts book and the complete set of Game of Thrones. There have been some very late nights enjoying good books in bed. I am currently enjoying reading 'Five Children and It on the Western Front'. One of my boys has got back into reading books this Christmas and is finishing reading the final 'How to train your dragon' book. Great blog!

  9. Happy New Year. Two of my favourite books (because I love science) I had as Christmas gifts were 'The Book of Trees' by Manuel Lima which has amazing diagrams and 'The Edge of the Sky' by Roberto Trotta. The latter makes science easy by only using words from the top 1000 most common words in English. Why say 'supersymmetric particles' when you can say 'mirror drops'?

  12. Glad you enjoyed The Silly Book of Weird and Wacky Words, Mr B. Have you tried the very simple but fun game 'A-Z Conversation' on p145? It's a great challenge for KS2. Only one person has ever managed to get to Z all the times I have played, although others have come close. You need to stick to the 10-sec time limit and not allow random sentences!
BTW, I hope to be on Blue Peter on World Books Day, as this books has been shortlisted for the 2016 BP Book Award.

  13. I received Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons. I loved Cold Comfort Farm so I am looking forward to reading this. I gave The Ultimate Star Wars and Grandpa's Great Escape (David Walliams)to a 9 year old grandchild, The Zombie Combat Field Guide for a 14 year old, Squishy McFluff the Invisible Cat (Pip Jones) and a collection of Alfie storybooks (Shirley Hughes) to a 5 year old, Three Little Pigs (First Reading) and another Alfie storybooks collection for her 5 year old cousin, a collection of Jill Murphy picture books for a 3 year old. The Pirates Next Door (Jonny Duddle) for an almost 5 year old and Warriors of the Storm (Bernard Cornwell) for a 37 year old! I also cheated and bought myself a couple of books that will go into the school library when I have finished them both; The Assassin's Blade (Sara J Maas) already finished and now reading Wolf Wilder (Katherine Rundell). I read Maas Throne of Glass series this summer and Assassin's blade is a collection of novellas that are a prequel.
